Advanced Dry Eye Care

Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. With each blink of the eyelids, tears spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea. Tears provide lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter in the eye and keep the surface of the eyes smooth and clear. Excess tears in the eyes flow into small drainage ducts in the inner corners of the eyelids, which drain into the back of the nose. Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage is not in balance.

Moses Eyecare offers several treatment options from basic to advanced.  We can tailor these options to best treat your disease symptoms.

Artificial Tears

Artificial tears provide moisture and relief for dry eyes due to temporary causes, like being tired or being in a dry climate.  They work by adding some of the same elements that your tears naturally have. This helps your tear film work more effectively to protect the surface of your eyes.

You can get lubricating eye drops without a prescription. There are many brands to choose from, but keep in mind that no single brand works best for all types of dry eye. You might need to try a few different brands to find the one that works best for your eyes.  Talk to your doctor to see which they recommend for you.

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs are tiny devices that are placed in the eye’s tear ducts (called puncta). Puncta are the tiny openings that drain tears from your eyes.  The plug stops tears from draining from the eye which helps keep the eye’s surface moist and comfortable.   This procedure is safe and painless and can be done in the office in just a few minutes.

Amniotic Membranes

Amniotic membranes contain specialized proteins and growth factors that diminish inflammation, prevent drying, aid tear stability and accelerate healing.  This is a treatment typically reserved for more advanced dry eye patients or those who have had an injury to the front surface of the eye.

Many of the common problems associated with dry eyes begin at the eyelid margin.  It’s actually the dirt, debris, and oil residue along the edge of your eyelids that can cause your eyes to itch, water, and burn (think of tartar buildup on teeth). ZEST is an in-office deep cleansing procedure that uses patented Zokrex technology with activated natural okra polysaccharide complexes to gently and effectively clear build-up and residue from your eyelids.  A procedure like this can be done on its own but is most effective when coupled with other in-office procedures like TearCare

The TearCare® System utilizes both wearable and smart technology to deliver targeted thermal energy (heat) to the eyelids.  Heat applied in this way is more effective than traditional thermal masks or hot compresses.  The heat helps remove any obstructions in the oil glands that sit along our lid margin.  Healthy flowing oil helps protect our tears and maintain good eye health which is important in the treatment of dry eye.  This technology is safe and painless and can be done in the office in approximately 30 minutes.
