Scleral Contact Lenses

Are Scleral Contact Lenses Right for me?

Frequently asked questions at Moses Eyecare Centers about sclerals

Q: What are scleral contact lenses?

A: Sclerals are a larger gas permeable lens. They are custom lenses combining the comfort of a soft lens with the visual clarity of an RGP hard contact lens.

Q: When do you use sclerals?

A: At Moses Eyecare we have been using scleral contact lenses for years They are a wonderful option for patients including those with Keratoconus, high levels of astigmatism, large or high prescriptions as well as individuals who have irregular corneas from trauma, prior surgery, or were just born that way.

Q: Are scleral lenses new?

A: Actually scleral contacts have been around for decades. The original Dr. Moses was fitting them in the late 1970’s. More recently, advances in the lens material and design have made them significantly more comfortable and healthy for your eyes.

Q: Are sclerals expensive?

A: Scleral contact lenses are a custom design lens. They do take a little more effort and time to be fit. Accordingly, they are slightly more expensive than a traditional RGP or hard lens. The good news is most insurance companies cover the lenses in full for certain ocular conditions.

Q: How do I find out if I am a candidate for scleral lenses?

A: The answer is easy. Call us today at Moses Eyecare Centers and allow us to give you the personal details according to your individualized care and insurance.
